Yuhong Group Co., Ltd. supplies critical components for high-temperature service, including heat exchanger tubes, fin tubes, furnace tubes, stainless steel seamless tubes, nickel alloy tubes, copper alloy tubes, heat exchanger tube bundles, and heat exchanger tubesheets. We also design and manufacture complete shell & tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and air coolers. Shown in the attached photograph is our ASTM A335 P11 alloy steel seamless tube - a chrome-moly grade widely used in furnaces, fired heaters, reformers, and high-temperature heat exchangers.
The ASTM A335 P11 tube is a seamless ferritic alloy steel tube manufactured to ASME Specification A335/A335M. Grade P11 has a nominal composition of 1.25% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum (1¼Cr-½Mo). This chrome-moly alloy offers:
These properties make P11 the preferred material for furnace radiant tubes, convection section tubes, fired heater coils, transfer lines, and high-temperature heat exchanger tubes in refineries, petrochemical plants, and power stations.
| Component | Material (Typical) | Role in Equipment Performance |
|---|---|---|
| Heat Exchanger Tube (P11) | ASTM A335 P11 | Carries high-temperature process fluid (oil, gas, steam) inside fired heater coils or waste heat recovery exchangers. |
| Furnace Tube (P11) | ASTM A335 P11 (same grade) | Radiant section or convection section tubes; directly exposed to flame or hot flue gas. |
| Fin Tube (optional on P11 base) | P11 tube + carbon/alloy steel fin | Added in convection sections to increase heat pickup from flue gas without extending tube length. |
| Fittings / Return Bends | ASTM A234 WP11 (wrought fitting) | Connects straight tube sections to form continuous furnace coils. |
| Tube Supports / Hangers | High-temperature alloy (e.g., 310 stainless) | Supports tube weight at elevated temperatures; prevents sagging. |
| Heat Exchanger Tubesheet (for exchanger application) | Chrome-moly forging (e.g., SA336 F11) | If P11 tubes are used in a heat exchanger, the tubesheet must be compatible alloy. |
| Property | P11 Advantage |
|---|---|
| Creep strength | Approximately 3-4× higher than carbon steel at 450-550°C - resists permanent deformation under long-term stress. |
| Oxidation resistance | Chromium forms a protective oxide layer; scaling rate much lower than carbon steel above 500°C. |
| Hydrogen attack resistance | The 0.5% Mo prevents hydrogen embrittlement and decarburization in high-pressure hydrogen service. |
| Thermal cycling tolerance | Lowers risk of fatigue cracking in start-up/shutdown cycles. |
| Weldability (with preheat) | Grade P11 can be welded using standard procedures (preheat 150-200°C, post-weld heat treatment required). |
| Grade | Cr% | Mo% | Max Temp (°C) | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel (SA106 B/C) | 0 | 0 | ~425 | Low-temperature furnace sections, steam service. |
| P11 (1 ¼Cr-½Mo) | 1.25 | 0.5 | ~550 | Furnace radiant tubes, convection sections, hydrogen service. |
| P22 (2 ¼Cr-1Mo) | 2.25 | 1.0 | ~580 | Higher-temperature furnaces, hydrocracker heaters. |
| P5 (5Cr- ½Mo) | 5.0 | 0.5 | ~600 | Severe high-temperature, high-oxidation service. |
| P9 (9Cr-1Mo) | 9.0 | 1.0 | ~650 | High-temperature with aggressive oxidation. |
| Failure | Cause | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Creep rupture | Long-term operation above design temperature | Monitor tube metal temperature; avoid over-firing. |
| Graphitization | Long-term exposure 430-480°C (carbon steel only) | Not a major concern for P11 - stable microstructure. |
| Hydrogen attack | High temperature + high H₂ pressure without Mo | P11's 0.5% Mo provides resistance - but monitor H₂ partial pressure. |
| Thermal fatigue | Frequent start-ups with poor warm-up | Follow proper warm-up procedures; preheat furnace slowly. |
| Oxidation / scaling | Excess air in combustion, or temperature too high for grade | Control excess air; consider aluminide coating or upgrade to P22. |
