Mechanical Properties & Condition Options
ASME SB163 permits UNS N04400 tubing in either annealed or stress-relieved condition per Table 2 of the specification. For U-bend configurations, the base tube is typically supplied in the annealed condition prior to bending to ensure formability, followed by stress relief as required.
Condition Tensile Strength min. (ksi / MPa) Yield Strength 0.2% Offset min. (ksi / MPa) Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm min. (%) Rockwell Hardness (Annealed Ends)
Annealed 70 (483) 28 (193) 35 --
Stress-Relieved 85 (586) 55 (379) 15 B75 max

Manufacturing Requirements & Mandatory Testing
Per ASME SB163 Section 6, each tube must undergo either hydrostatic testing or nondestructive electric testing at the manufacturer's option unless otherwise specified in the purchase order. The specification covers outside diameters up to 3 in. (76.2 mm) with minimum wall thicknesses up to 0.148 in. (3.76 mm) and average wall thicknesses up to 0.165 in. (4.19 mm).
Mandatory Lot Testing per ASME SB163 Sections 9-10:
Test Type Sampling Requirement Specification Reference
Chemical Analysis One test per heat Section 10.1
Tension Test One test per lot Section 10.2
Flare Test 1% of tubes per lot (min. one tube) Section 10.5
Hydrostatic or NDT Each tube Section 6.5
Grain Size (where applicable) One test per lot Section 10.4
For U-bend tubes, the supplementary requirements of ASME SB163 (Section S1) apply:
  • Wall thickness at bend apex shall not be less than: TF = T(2R) / (2R + D), where T = minimum permissible wall prior to bending, R = centerline bend radius, D = nominal OD
  • Leg length tolerance: plus ⅛ in. for lengths up to 20 ft, increasing to plus ⅜ in. for lengths over 60 ft
  • Squareness of ends: 0.010 in. max for OD up to ⅝ in.; 0.016 in. max for larger diameters
Supporting Fabrication Capabilities & Material Grades
Beyond the tube itself, Yuhong supplies complementary heat exchanger components manufactured to matching material grades:
Component Typical Material Relevant Standard
Tubesheets UNS N04400 / UNS N08825 ASME SB127 / SB162
Baffles UNS N04400 / Carbon Steel ASME SB127
Channel Heads UNS N04400 / Clad Materials ASME Section VIII Div.1
Tube-to-Tubesheet Welding ERNiCu-7 Filler ASME Section IX
Full traceability is maintained from raw material mill certificates through final inspection, with EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 certification available upon request.
Application Environments
UNS N04400 U-bend tubes are specified in heat transfer equipment where the combination of seawater corrosion resistance, high strength, and fabricability is required:
  • Shell-and-tube heat exchangers - marine cooling water service, chemical plant reboilers
  • Condensers - power generation and desalination plants with seawater or brackish cooling media
  • Oil & gas processing - hydrocarbon processing equipment, crude oil distillation towers
  • Chemical processing - equipment handling hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, and alkaline solutions
  • Marine engineering - offshore platforms, shipboard heat exchangers, and ballast water systems
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between ASME SB163 and ASTM B163 for UNS N04400 tubes?
ASME SB163 is the Section II designation adopted for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications; ASTM B163 is the corresponding standard under ASTM jurisdiction. The technical requirements are identical.
Q: What is the maximum outside diameter covered by ASME SB163?
The specification covers tubes 3 in. (76.2 mm) and under in outside diameter.
Q: Is hydrostatic testing required after U-bending?
When specified by the purchaser, hydrostatic testing shall be performed after bending with a minimum holding time of 5 seconds at pressure.
