Detailed Product Description

Application & Compliance

The ASTM A269 TP316L bright annealed seamless tube is specified for shell and tube heat exchangers, condensers, and boiler systems operating in high-purity, corrosive, or chloride-bearing environments where both the tube-side fluid and the shell-side medium must be protected from contamination and corrosion product release. In pharmaceutical water systems, the bright annealed surface prevents biofilm formation and particle adhesion, supporting validated cleaning and sterilization cycles. In food and beverage processing, the smooth, oxide-free bore ensures that product contact surfaces meet hygienic design requirements and resist pitting from cleaning chemicals. In chemical and petrochemical heat exchangers, the 2.00–3.00% molybdenum content in TP316L provides resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion that would perforate 304/304L tubes. When assembled into a tube bundle and rolled or welded into a heat exchanger tubesheet, the tube provides a pressure boundary between the tube side and shell side fluids. The low carbon content of TP316L (0.035% maximum) prevents chromium carbide precipitation during welding, maintaining intergranular corrosion resistance at the tube-to-tubesheet joint.

The tube is manufactured and tested in accordance with ASTM A269 / A269M and ASME SA269 / SA269M, the standard specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service. Certification is available per EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2. Third-party inspection by ABS, GL, DNV, NK, PED, AD2000, and CCS is available upon request.

Problem Solved

Conventional pickled or mill-finish stainless tubes present three problems in high-purity and corrosive service: residual oxide scale that traps contaminants and nucleates pitting, surface roughness that promotes biofilm formation and particle adhesion, and weld sensitization at the tubesheet joint that leads to intergranular corrosion. Bright annealing eliminates all three. The controlled-atmosphere furnace process removes oxide scale and produces a clean, reflective surface without pickling, avoiding the hydrogen embrittlement risk and acid residue associated with acid cleaning. The smooth BA surface, with inner roughness typically Ra ≤ 0.5 μm, supports cleanability and reduces the risk of product contamination. The low-carbon TP316L chemistry, combined with solution annealing at 1040°C minimum, ensures that the tube-to-tubesheet weld does not sensitize, extending joint life in chloride and acid service.

Material Specification – ASTM A269 TP316L

ASTM A269 covers nominal-wall-thickness austenitic stainless steel tubing for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service. TP316L is the low-carbon grade of 18-8 stainless with molybdenum addition. The low carbon content improves weldability and reduces carbide precipitation during welding, thereby reducing the requirement for reheat treatment and improving resistance to corrosive environments.

Heat Treatment and Bright Annealing

The tube is solution annealed at a minimum temperature of 1900°F (1040°C) followed by rapid quenching, as required by ASTM A269 for TP316L. The bright annealing process is performed in a controlled-atmosphere furnace containing hydrogen or a hydrogen-nitrogen mixture. The low oxygen potential of the atmosphere prevents oxidation of the stainless steel surface during annealing, producing a clean, bright, and reflective finish without subsequent pickling or mechanical polishing. The bright annealed surface maintains a complete, undisturbed passive film and avoids the risk of hydrogen embrittlement or residual acid contamination associated with pickling. Inner surface roughness is typically controlled to Ra ≤ 0.5 μm.

Manufacturing Process

Seamless TP316L tube is produced by cold drawing or cold rolling from stainless steel hollows. The manufacturing sequence includes raw material inspection, tube preparation, cold drawing, degreasing and cleaning, bright annealing in a controlled atmosphere furnace, straightening, cutting to length, and final inspection. The bright annealing step both softens the cold-worked structure and produces the required surface finish in a single operation.

Dimensional Tolerances (per ASTM A269)

Outside diameter tolerance is ±0.005″ (±0.13 mm) for sizes up to 1/2″; ±0.005″ (±0.13 mm) for sizes over 1/2″ to 1-1/2″; ±0.010″ (±0.25 mm) for sizes over 1-1/2″ to under 3-1/2″; and ±0.015″ (±0.38 mm) for sizes over 3-1/2″ to under 5-1/2″. Wall thickness tolerance is ±10% of nominal for sizes over 1/2″. Length tolerance is +1/8″ (+3.2 mm) for sizes up to 1-1/2″, and +3/16″ (+4.8 mm) for sizes over 1-1/2″ to under 5-1/2″. For tighter tolerances required in precision instrumentation or high-purity service, OD tolerance can be held to ±0.05 mm and wall thickness tolerance to ±5% by agreement.

Size Range

Outer diameter ranges from 6 mm to 219 mm (customizable). Wall thickness ranges from 0.5 mm to 20 mm. Standard lengths are 5.8 m, 6 m, 11.8 m, or 12 m, with cut-to-length and U-bend options available.

Testing and Quality Control

Each tube is subjected to the following tests in accordance with ASTM A269 / ASME SA269 and ASTM A1016:

  • Hydrostatic Test – Each tube is hydrostatically tested unless a non-destructive electric test is specified as a substitute.

  • Non-Destructive Electric Test – Eddy current testing or ultrasonic testing as specified.

  • Flaring Test – Evaluates resistance to deformation and wall thickness consistency.

  • Flattening Test – Assesses ductility and detects laminations or seams.

  • Hardness Test – Verifies material condition per HRB scale.

  • Chemical Composition Analysis – Spectrometric or wet chemical analysis to verify alloy composition.

  • Dimensional Inspection – Verification of outer diameter, wall thickness, length, and straightness.

  • Surface Inspection – Visual examination for scale, scratches, and surface defects on the bright annealed finish.

Documentation

Each shipment is supplied with Mill Test Certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1), heat treatment records (solution annealing and bright annealing charts), hydrostatic test reports, non-destructive electric test reports (ET/UT), flaring and flattening test reports, dimensional inspection reports, and surface roughness records. Third-party inspection (e.g., BV, SGS, TÜV, DNV, LR, ABS) is available upon request.
