This case covers the manufacture, packing and ocean shipment of two custom shell & tube heat exchangers from Shanghai, China to Poti Port, Georgia. The order contained two units of very different capacities, so both the engineering work and the export packing had to be handled as two separate projects running in parallel. The consignment left Shanghai in excellent condition, with a total net weight of 15,800 kg and a total volume of 48.79 CBM.
The Georgian buyer required two shell & tube heat exchangers for different duty points in the same plant: one compact unit for a lower-flow process line and one large-diameter, long-tube unit for a high-flow duty. Because the two units sit in existing pipe racks, the connecting nozzles, saddle supports and overall footprint had to match the customer's site drawings rather than a standard catalogue product. The client also needed:
The final consignment consisted of two sets, packed as packages #2/3 and #3/3 of the shipment:
| Item | Product | Qty | Net Weight | Gross Weight | Package Size (mm) | Volume | Package No. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger | 1 SET | 3,950.00 KGS | 4,030.00 KGS | 6,100 × 900 × 1,520 | 8.34 CBM | #2/3 |
| 3 | Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger | 1 SET | 11,850.00 KGS | 11,950.00 KGS | 9,250 × 1,650 × 2,650 | 40.45 CBM | #3/3 |
| TOTAL | 15,800.00 KGS | 15,980.00 KGS | — | 48.79 CBM | 2 packages | ||
Route: loading port Shanghai (China), destination Poti Port (Georgia).
Both exchangers were fabricated from the approved tube sheet and baffle drawings, with tube-to-tubesheet expansion and welding checked against the client's specification. Each unit passed hydrostatic pressure testing on both the shell side and the tube side, and dimensional checks were carried out on the nozzle orientation and saddle height before painting. Surface preparation and final coating were completed after testing so that no test marks or handling damage remained on the finished shells.
The two units were packed differently because of their size. The 6.1-metre unit was secured on a timber skid with the nozzles protected by wooden caps, while the 9.25-metre, 11.95-tonne unit was fixed on a heavy-duty saddle frame with additional cross bracing to control deflection during lifting and ocean transport. Both packages were wrapped in VCI film and covered with reinforced tarpaulin, and the shipping marks were stencilled on two faces of each package.
The consignment was booked as one shipment from Shanghai to Poti. Because the large unit measured 9,250 × 1,650 × 2,650 mm, the stowage plan was confirmed with the carrier in advance to make sure the flat-rack / break-bulk arrangement matched the lifting points of the saddles. Loading, lashing and photographic records were completed at the port before departure.
For buyers in Georgia and the wider Caucasus region, this project shows how oversized shell & tube exchangers can be engineered, tested and shipped from China on a single booking — with the packing dimensions and weights confirmed up front so that port handling and inland trucking are planned before production is finished.
