Understanding TEMA Heat Exchanger Types: A Complete Guide to Shell and Tube Exchanger Classifications

Haber Detayları
What Is a TEMA Heat Exchanger?

Shell and tube heat exchangers are the backbone of industrial heat transfer, serving the oil & gas, chemical, power generation, HVAC, food processing, and marine industries. A TEMA heat exchanger is a shell and tube heat exchanger designed, fabricated, and tested in full compliance with the standards published by the Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association (TEMA). TEMA is not a separate type of equipment—it is the most widely accepted design and manufacturing code for shell and tube exchangers worldwide.

Why the TEMA Standard Matters

The TEMA Standards, first issued in the United States, provide a universal technical language covering design pressure and temperature, material selection, tolerances, fabrication, inspection, and testing. For buyers and engineers, a TEMA designation removes ambiguity, speeds up quotation, and guarantees that a unit built to a given specification will perform reliably regardless of the fabricator.

TEMA Classes: R, C, and B

TEMA divides exchangers into three service classes based on application severity:

Class Application Requirements
R Petroleum and heavy chemical processing Most stringent mechanical and fabrication requirements
C General commercial and industrial service Moderate requirements, economical design
B Chemical process service Intermediate requirements between R and C
How to Read a TEMA Type Code

Every TEMA designation is a three-letter code that describes the mechanical configuration:

  • First letter — front-end stationary head type (A, B, C, N, D)
  • Second letter — shell type (E, F, G, H, J, K, X)
  • Third letter — rear-end head type (L, M, N, P, S, T, U, W)
Most Common TEMA Types
  • BEM — Bonnet head, one-pass shell, fixed tubesheet. Simple and economical; ideal for clean fluids and moderate temperature differentials.
  • BEU — Bonnet head, one-pass shell, U-tube bundle. The U-tube design absorbs thermal expansion and allows easy bundle removal for cleaning.
  • AES — Channel with removable cover, one-pass shell, floating head. Handles high temperature differentials and dirty fluids; the bundle is fully removable.
  • AKT — Kettle-type reboiler, widely used for vaporization and distillation in refining and chemical plants.
  • AEL / AEM — Channel front head with fixed tubesheet, ideal where routine tube-side cleaning is required.
How to Choose the Right TEMA Type

Selection depends on thermal duty, operating pressure and temperature, fouling tendency, and maintenance requirements. Working closely with an experienced manufacturer early in the design phase ensures the optimal TEMA type and class are selected, avoiding costly over-design or premature failure.

About YUHONG

YUHONG HOLDING GROUP has manufactured code-compliant thermal equipment since 1990. We operate three ASME-certified facilities across Jiangsu—Jiangyin, Jinjiang, and Yancheng—spanning 184,000 square meters. With more than 730 workers and an annual capacity exceeding 3,600 units, we produce TEMA shell and tube heat exchangers, air coolers, pressure vessels, and fired heaters for customers worldwide, with an export share of 80–90%. Our engineers help you select the right TEMA type and class for your process, and deliver each unit with complete documentation and inspection reports.
