304 vs. 316 Stainless Steel Selection Guide
304/304L – Versatile and Economical Choice
The most widely used stainless steel, suitable for most organic chemicals, food, freshwater, and mildly corrosive environments. "L" stands for Low Carbon, maintaining good resistance to intergranular corrosion without post-weld heat treatment.
316/316L – Enhanced Corrosion Resistance
Contains 2-3% molybdenum, significantly enhancing resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion caused by chlorides. Preferred for handling brine, seawater, bleach, and many acidic media.
Selection Recommendations
For process fluids containing chlorides, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, or coastal environments, 316/316L is recommended. For general process water, oil, steam, or most food processing, 304/304L is typically the most cost-effective choice.
