A shell and tube condenser operates under pressure from both the shell side and the tube side, and its structure must satisfy strict limits set by relevant design standards. Because these constraints vary between standards, selecting the correct one is the first step in any engineering project. In most chemical industry systems, the Japanese standard is widely adopted as the design basis. Below we answer the most common questions about design conditions for shell and tube condensers.
Design conditions are the set of pressure, temperature, and material parameters that define how a condenser must be built. They are determined after the material balance and heat balance have been calculated from the process conditions, and after the model and operating conditions of the condenser have been selected. In short: process conditions → material and heat balance → heat transfer calculation → model selection → design conditions.
The design pressure is normally higher than the operating (working) pressure. When the difference between the working range and the maximum pressure is large, different design pressures lead to different wall thicknesses and manufacturing methods. A coefficient greater than 1.0 is therefore multiplied by the operating pressure to obtain the design pressure.
When fluids with a large temperature difference are handled, the temperature distribution along the heat transfer wall becomes complex, so the actual wall temperature of the condenser varies considerably. In practice, the inlet and outlet temperatures are defined as the operating temperatures, and the more severe of these is used as the design temperature.
There is no single universal standard. The appropriate standard depends on the process involved and on local regulations. Common choices include the Japanese standard for chemical systems, along with ASME and TEMA for international projects. Selecting the correct standard early avoids costly redesign later.
| Parameter | Basis | Key Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Design pressure | Operating pressure × coefficient (>1) | Higher than operating pressure |
| Design temperature | Inlet / outlet operating temperature | Use the more severe value |
| Vacuum service | External pressure | 1 kgf/cm² gauge |
| Standard | Process nature + regulations | Japanese standard for chemical use |
Because it directly determines the wall thickness and manufacturing method of the condenser. Underestimating design pressure risks structural failure; overestimating it wastes material and raises cost. Careful evaluation of operating conditions is therefore essential for both safety and economy.
Provide your process conditions — flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, and operating pressures — and our engineers will calculate the material and heat balance, select the right model, and define the design conditions for your shell and tube condenser.
