Product Description
ASTM A789 S32205 TUBE
Yuhong Group Co., Ltd. specializes in heat transfer equipment and precision-engineered tubular components for shell-and-tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and air coolers. Our engineering and manufacturing capabilities are backed by ASME Code compliance and TEMA standards.

Chemical Composition - ASTM A789 UNS S32205
UNS S32205 is a 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, 5-6% nickel nitrogen-alloyed duplex stainless steel with tighter compositional control compared to UNS S31803.
Element Composition (%) Notes
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.030
Manganese (Mn) ≤ 2.00
Silicon (Si) ≤ 1.00
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.030
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.020
Chromium (Cr) 22.0 - 23.0 Primary corrosion resistance element
Nickel (Ni) 4.5 - 6.5 Austenite stabilizer
Molybdenum (Mo) 3.0 - 3.5 Pitting resistance enhancer
Nitrogen (N) 0.14 - 0.20 Strengthens austenite phase

Mechanical Properties & Manufacturing
Tensile Properties (ASTM A789 / ASME SA789)
Property Requirement
Tensile Strength, min 655 MPa (95 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min 450 MPa (65 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, min 25%
Hardness, max 293 HBW
Manufacturing Process
Tubes are manufactured by seamless or welded process with no filler metal added.
Critical manufacturing controls:
  • Heat Treatment: Solution annealed at 1020-1100°C (1870-2010°F) to restore optimal ferrite-austenite phase balance
  • Quenching: Rapid cooling to prevent precipitation of intermetallic phases
  • Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE): PRE > 36 (calculated as %Cr + 3.3 * %Mo + 16 * %N)
Required Tests (per ASTM A789)
Test Requirement
Flattening Test Per ASTM A450/A450M
Flaring Test Per ASTM A450/A450M
Hardness Test Brinell or Rockwell
Hydrostatic Test Each tube
Nondestructive Electric Test Optional per specification
Intergranular Corrosion Test When specified

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between UNS S32205 and UNS S31803?
Both are 2205 duplex grades. S32205 has tighter compositional limits (Cr 22.0-23.0% vs. 21.0-23.0%; Mo 3.0-3.5% vs. 2.5-3.5%; N 0.14-0.20% vs. 0.08-0.20%) and is considered the preferred grade for ASTM A789 tubing due to its enhanced corrosion resistance and weldability.
Why is solution annealing critical for duplex tubing?
Solution annealing at 1020-1100°C followed by rapid cooling restores the optimal 50/50 ferrite-austenite phase balance. Improper heat treatment can precipitate sigma phase, which reduces corrosion resistance and toughness. All Yuhong-supplied welded S32205 tubes undergo full solution annealing.
