Product Description
ASME/TEMA U-Tube Bundle for Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers - Oil, Gas & Chemical Applications
Yuhong Group Co., Ltd. manufactures U-tube bundles and complete shell-and-tube heat exchangers in accordance with ASME BPVC Section VIII Div. 1 and TEMA standards. We supply replacement bundles, tubesheets, baffles, and heads for refinery, petrochemical, and power generation services. For high-pressure applications exceeding 6.2 MPa (ga), U-tube bundles are the preferred construction when approved by the purchaser.
Design Configuration and TEMA Classification
TEMA Class R governs mechanical design for severe refinery and petroleum service, requiring heavier tubesheets, thicker baffles, and tighter fabrication tolerances. The single-tubesheet U-tube design accommodates thermal expansion without an expansion joint, making it suitable for large temperature differentials between shell and tube sides.
U-Bend Geometry Requirements
Parameter Requirement
Minimum mean U-bend radius 1.5 × tube OD (austenitic SS); 2.0 × tube OD (Duplex, high-Ni alloys)
Min. leg spacing (high fouling service) 4 × tube OD, min. nominal tube diameter 25.4 mm
Tube pitch (clean service) 1.25 × tube OD, triangular pattern
Baffle spacing 20%-50% of shell ID; min. 50 mm
For martensitic, super austenitic, Duplex stainless steels, titanium, and high-nickel alloys, the minimum mean U-bend radius increases to 2.0 × tube OD due to work-hardening characteristics.
Materials and Fabrication
Tube Material Specifications
Standard Grades Application
ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 TP304/304L, TP316/316L, TP321/321H General refinery service
ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507 Chloride-containing environments
ASTM A269 TP304, TP316 General corrosive service
U-bent portions plus not less than 150 mm of each straight leg beyond the tangent point are solution annealed at minimum 1040°C followed by rapid cooling below 370°C. An inert gas purge protects internal surfaces during heat treatment.
Testing Protocols
Inspection and Testing Requirements
Test Standard Reference Requirement
Hydrostatic test ASME BPVC Sec. VIII Div. 1 1.5 × design pressure; chloride content ≤30 ppm for austenitic SS
Helium leak test ASME BPVC Sec. V Art. 10 Min. 0.35 barg; sensitivity ≤1×10⁻⁶ Pa*m³/s
Tube-to-tubesheet joint ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1 App. A Tension strength test at room temperature per material combination
PMI verification ASTM E1476 100% for alloy materials
Thermal and Mechanical Design Parameters
For U-tube tubesheets, ASME Part UHX-12 governs design based on effective elastic constants (E*, v*) derived from ligament efficiency. The maximum stresses in tubesheet, shell, and channel are limited to appropriate stress classifications of Section VIII Div. 2 Appendix 4. TEMA Class R requires heavier tubesheet thickness than Classes B and C, particularly for high-pressure and high-temperature differential services.
Engineering FAQ
Q: What parameters are required for replacement bundle fabrication?
A: Shell ID, tube OD, wall thickness, tube length, bend radius, tube count, tube pitch, baffle spacing, design pressure/temperature, and material specifications for shell and tube sides.
Q: Why specify U-tube over fixed tubesheet for high-temperature service?
A: The single-tubesheet U-tube design allows unrestricted thermal expansion of tubes relative to the shell, eliminating thermally induced stresses without an expansion joint. This construction is preferred where tube-side operating temperature differential exceeds 110°C.
