ASTM A179 Extruded Finned Tubes for Air Coolers
ASTM A179 extruded finned tubes are widely used in air-cooled heat exchangers and industrial cooling equipment requiring high thermal efficiency and long-term reliability. Manufactured from ASTM A179 seamless low-carbon steel tubes as the base tube, these finned tubes feature an integrally formed aluminum outer fin layer created through a cold extrusion process.
Unlike mechanically wound fins, extruded fins completely encapsulate the base tube with a continuous aluminum sleeve, providing excellent environmental protection while maximizing heat transfer performance. The robust fin structure ensures resistance against vibration, mechanical damage, and thermal cycling, making them particularly suitable for demanding operating conditions.
Our extruded finned tubes are engineered and manufactured according to customer specifications and international standards to deliver consistent performance in petrochemical plants, power generation facilities, compressor aftercoolers, and process air cooling systems.
Product Features
The high-density aluminum fins significantly increase the external heat transfer area, improving overall thermal performance and reducing equipment footprint.
The aluminum fin root forms a protective sleeve around the ASTM A179 tube, shielding it from atmospheric corrosion and extending service life.
The integral fin construction offers outstanding resistance to vibration, handling damage, and thermal fatigue.
The extruded fin design minimizes fin loosening and maintains stable performance under cyclic temperature fluctuations.
Enhanced thermal efficiency contributes to lower fan power consumption and improved energy utilization.
Various fin geometries and tube dimensions can be customized to satisfy different process requirements.
Manufacturing Process
Extruded finned tubes are produced through a cold-forming process:
- An aluminum sleeve is fitted over the ASTM A179 seamless tube.
- Specialized extrusion rollers apply controlled pressure.
- The aluminum sleeve is plastically deformed outward.
- Integral fins are formed continuously along the tube length.
- The remaining aluminum beneath the fins creates a protective outer sheath around the base tube.
This manufacturing method produces fins with exceptional mechanical integrity and thermal contact.
Typical Applications
Extruded finned tubes are extensively used in:
- Air-cooled heat exchangers
- Refinery air coolers
- Petrochemical processing units
- Natural gas processing plants
- Compressor intercoolers and aftercoolers
- Power generation facilities
- Chemical process cooling systems
- Marine cooling equipment
- HVAC industrial cooling systems
- Waste heat recovery units
