Astm A269 Tp316l Seamless Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tube For Shell And Tube Heat Exchanger And Heat Exchanger Tubesheet
ASTM A269 TP316L seamless stainless steel tube is manufactured for general corrosion-resistant service in heat exchanger, condenser, and instrumentation applications. The TP316L grade, with a maximum carbon content of 0.035% and molybdenum content of 2.00–3.00%, provides enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing environments compared with 304/304L grades. The low carbon content reduces susceptibility to intergranular corrosion (sensitization) after welding, making TP316L particularly suitable for tube-to-tubesheet joints in shell and tube heat exchangers.
Material Specification – ASTM A269 TP316L
ASTM A269 covers seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing intended for general corrosion-resistant service. The TP316L grade is the low-carbon version of TP316, with molybdenum added to improve resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.

Dimensional Tolerances (per ASTM A269)
Outside diameter tolerances for seamless tube: ±0.005″ (±0.13 mm) for sizes up to 1/2″; ±0.005″ (±0.13 mm) for sizes over 1/2″ to 1-1/2″; ±0.010″ (±0.25 mm) for sizes over 1-1/2″ to under 3-1/2″; ±0.015″ (±0.38 mm) for sizes over 3-1/2″ to under 5-1/2″. Wall thickness tolerance is ±10% of nominal for sizes over 1/2″. Length tolerance is +1/8″ (+3.2 mm) for sizes up to 1-1/2″, and +3/16″ (+4.8 mm) for sizes over 1-1/2″ to under 5-1/2″. Ovality tolerance is twice the diameter tolerance for tubes with 1.6 mm wall thickness.
Manufacturing Protocols and Testing Requirements
Heat Treatment
Solution annealing is mandatory for seamless tubes. After final cold drawing, heat treatment shall be conducted to ensure uniform grain structure and eliminate residual stresses. This is critical for tube-to-tubesheet joint integrity. The TP316L grade requires solution annealing at a temperature of 1040°C (1900°F) or higher, followed by rapid quenching in water or by other means as specified. The heat treatment temperature shall be controlled to avoid sensitization of the low-carbon austenitic structure.
Surface Finish
Tubes are available in bright annealed (BA), polished, or pickled condition to suit specific service environments. Bright annealed tubes are produced in a controlled atmosphere furnace to maintain a clean, oxide-free surface. Pickled tubes are chemically treated to remove surface scale and contamination. Polished tubes are mechanically finished to achieve a specified surface roughness.
Mandatory Testing (per ASTM A269 / A1016)
-
Flattening Test – Verifies ductility and detects laminations or seams
-
Flaring Test – Ensures wall thickness consistency and workability
-
Hydrostatic Test – 100% leak integrity verification
-
Eddy Current or Ultrasonic Test – Non-destructive evaluation per specification requirements
-
Hardness Test – Verification of material condition
-
Grain Size Determination – Per ASTM E112 when specified
-
Intergranular Corrosion Test – Per ASTM A262 Practice E when specified
Manufacturing Capabilities
Yuhong Group maintains in-house processing capabilities supporting complete heat exchanger fabrication. U-bending is performed to TEMA standard radii with custom drawings accepted. Precision cutting is performed to tolerances per A450/A1016. End finishing includes deburring, beveling, and threading as specified.

Comparison with ASTM A213
ASTM A269 and ASTM A213 are both specifications for stainless steel tubing, but they differ in scope and requirements. ASTM A213 mandates seamless construction, tighter dimensional tolerances, and mandatory non-destructive testing for high-temperature and pressure boundary applications. ASTM A269 covers seamless or welded tubes for general corrosion-resistant service. For low-to-medium pressure heat exchangers operating below 400°C, A269 seamless tubes offer a cost-effective solution. For elevated temperature or creep-critical applications, ASTM A213 may be more suitable.
316 vs 316L
The primary distinction between 316 and 316L is carbon content. Type 316 has a maximum carbon content of 0.08%, while 316L has a maximum carbon content of 0.035%. The lower carbon content in 316L reduces susceptibility to intergranular corrosion (sensitization) after welding, making it preferred for heat exchanger tube-to-tubesheet joints.
Applications
ASTM A269 TP316L seamless tube is specified for shell and tube heat exchangers in the following service environments:
-
Chemical Processing – Handling corrosive media with chloride content
-
Petrochemical Refineries – Hydrocarbon cooling and heating services
-
Seawater Cooling Systems – Where pitting resistance is critical
-
Feedwater Heaters – Thermal stability requirements
-
Condensers and Evaporators – Clean service with moderate temperature gradients
-
