ASME SA182 F11 Self-Reinforced Nozzle: High-Temp Pressure Vessel Part​




ASME SA182 F11 Self-Reinforced Nozzle is a critical high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT) component used in boilers, reactors, and power/petrochemical systems. It integrates reinforcement directly into the nozzle forging, eliminating the need for external reinforcement pads. This design enhances structural integrity while simplifying fabrication.



Technical Details


1. Material: SA182 F11 Forged Steel

  • Composition (Key Elements):

    • Cr (1.00–1.50%), Mo (0.44–0.65%), C (0.05–0.20%)

    • Classes: Class 2 (most common), Class 3 (higher strength).

  • Mechanical Properties (Class 2, min.):

    • Tensile Strength: 415 MPa (60 ksi)

    • Yield Strength: 205 MPa (30 ksi)

    • Hardness: 121–174 HB

  • Temperature Limits:

    • Max Service: 595°C (1100°F) for creep resistance.

2. Self-Reinforced Design

  • Principle: Extra thickness at the nozzle-vessel junction provides reinforcement per ASME Sec. VIII Div. 1 (UG-37 to UG-45).

  • Reinforcement Zone:

    • Extends d (nozzle ID) or Rn + tn + t from the centerline.

    • Height: 2.5t or 2.5tn (whichever is smaller).

  • Advantages:

    • No external pad → Fewer welds, reduced corrosion risk, smoother flow.

    • Improved fatigue resistance at the junction.


3. Fabrication & Welding

  • Critical Steps:

    • Preheat: 200–300°C (400–600°F) to prevent cracking.

    • Welding: Use compatible consumables (e.g., E8018-B2).

    • PWHT Mandatory: 675–760°C (1250–1400°F) for stress relief.

      • Cooling Rate Control: Avoid temper embrittlement (375–575°C range).

  • NDT Requirements:

    • RT (radiographic) for welds + MT/PT (surface cracks) + UT (forgings).


4. Applications

  • Power plants (boiler drums, steam headers).

  • Petrochemical reactors & heat exchangers.

The SA516 Gr485 material is known for its low-temperature toughness, and the vendor confirmed the impact testing met our specifications. Shipping to a remote location is always challenging, but the crating was heavy-duty and protected the unit during the long truck haul.

The QA/QC system is comparable to Japanese pressure vessel manufacturers. We requested additional UT testing on all Category A joints, and they accommodated without delay.
