Whether a shell and tube heat exchanger requires a comprehensive cleaning after every shutdown or batch operation primarily depends on the physicochemical properties of the process fluid (e.g., viscosity, crystallization tendency, fouling potential), operating parameters, and duration of equipment downtime.
For media prone to coking, crystallization, high viscosity, or those containing suspended solids, immediate flushing and draining post-shutdown is mandatory to prevent fluid solidification and blockage within the tube or shell sides. For clean media (such as softened water), a combined strategy of periodic deep chemical cleaning and routine flushing is standard practice. Timely cleaning effectively minimizes fouling resistance, preserves the design overall heat transfer coefficient, and prevents under-deposit corrosion.
Prior to initiating any cleaning procedures, shut off system power and pump operations. Close the inlet and outlet valves on both tube and shell sides, and install blind flanges to completely isolate the heat exchanger from the production loop in accordance with safety maintenance protocols.
Open the bottom drain valves and top vent valves to thoroughly evacuate remaining process fluids from both tube and shell sides. For volatile, corrosive, or high-viscosity media, introduce low-pressure steam or nitrogen purging to eliminate lingering residues.
Select mechanical hydro-blasting or chemical circulation cleaning based on the fouling mechanism (e.g., mineral scale, heavy oil, bio-slime, or polymers):
Mechanical Flushing: Deploy high-pressure water jets to flush tube internals and shell-side clearances, stripping away loose deposits.
Chemical Cleaning: Circulate formulated chemical cleaning solutions (with appropriate corrosion inhibitors) to dissolve hard scale and tenacious hydrocarbons, followed by a fresh water flush until neutral pH is restored.
Wipe down the external shell casing, flange sealing faces, and structural supports using industrial cleaning cloths to remove dust, oil grease, and chemical splatter, preserving external surfaces against atmospheric corrosion.
Following cleaning, meticulously inspect the expanded or welded tube-to-tubesheet joints and flange gaskets (e.g., flexible graphite or metallic spiral wound gaskets). Replace degraded or deformed seals and retighten loose bolts to prevent cross-contamination or external leakage.
Apply anti-rust lubricants to valve stems and structural bolting in compliance with standard operating procedures. Prior to recommissioning, perform hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure tests to confirm zero-leakage integrity before introducing fluid media.
